How Microneedling Works

The microneedling process breaks down damaged skin and old scar tissue to stimulate the skin cells so that new tissue layers can be generated. During a short in-office visit, the skin is thoroughly cleaned, and a numbing agent is applied to the skin’s surface. A small handheld device called the SkinPen by Bellus Medical has 12 tiny disposable needles that create small piercings when moved over the skin. The SkinPen is far more advanced than old-fashioned rolling devices.

Benefits of Microneedling

Among the benefits of microneedling are the following:

  • Improving skin texture, tone, and firmness
  • Reducing pore size, pigmentation, and other irregularities
  • Stimulating increased collagen production
  • Improving the absorption of skincare products
  • Reducing fine lines, wrinkles, and other signs of aging skin
  • Increasing self-confidence

After the Treatment

After a microneedling treatment, the surface of the skin typically appears red, like a sunburn. Within a few hours after the procedure, the redness turns pink and slowly disappears. During and after the healing process, it’s important to avoid sunlight and wear a protective zinc-based sunblock whenever you spend time outdoors.

Depending on the condition of your skin, we recommend six to eight microneedling treatments for optimal results. Over the course of several treatments, the skin slowly starts to restructure itself.

Expected Results

Microneedling is a safe, effective procedure that’s a popular alternative to other skin rejuvenation methods. It effectively stimulates circulation and collagen production to improve your skin. Microneedling is even more powerful when combined with other non-surgical products, such as BOTOX® or injectable fillers.

Our patients who’ve taken advantage of microneedling say that following the treatment, their skin tone appears more even, and their faces are “glowing.” Fortunately, microneedling can be performed effectively on all skin types and tones, and there are no risks of hyperpigmentation or scarring.
