Overview
Midlothian, VA cosmetic surgeon, Dr. Matthew Bridges M.D. FACS, is proud to offer patients microneedling, one of the latest advancements in skin rejuvenation. Also known as skin needling, this minimally invasive procedure involves the use of a device that contains small, fine needles, which puncture the skin. These tiny puncture wounds create a “trigger” effect for the production of collagen, which fills these wounds essentially creating an improvement on the skin's surface. Microneedling is used to improve skin texture, tone, and firmness, as well as reduce the size of pores, pigmentation, and other irregularities.
How it Works
During a short, in-office visit, the skin is thoroughly cleaned and a numbing agent is applied to the skin’s surface. A small handheld device called the SkinPen by Bellus Medical (http://skinpen.com) with 12 disposable tiny needles is moved back and forth over the skin to create small piercings. This device is much more advanced than that of the old fashioned rolling devices commonly used. This process breaks down damaged skin and old scar tissue to stimulate the skin cells to turnover so that the new formation of tissue layers can be generated.
After the Treatment
After a microneedling treatment, the surface of the skin will appear red like a sunburn. Within a few hours after the procedure, the redness turns to pink and will slowly go away. It is important to avoid the sun and wear a protective zinc-based sunblock during and after the healing phase. We recommend 6-8 treatments depending on the condition of the skin. The skin slowly starts to restructure itself over the subsequent months.
Expected Results
Microneedling is a safe and effective procedure that is quickly becoming a popular choice over other skin rejuvenation methods. It effectively stimulates the production of collagen and circulation, creating an improved skin texture. Our patients remark that their skin appears more even-toned and “glowing” after this treatment. Microneedling can be performed on all skin types and colors and there are no risks associated with hyperpigmentation or scarring. It can be combined with another nonsurgical procedure, such as BOTOX or an injectable filler.
